COMMUNITY

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

MSOW takes pride in involving parents in our activities. Throughout the year, special events are scheduled for parents and children, including a fall picnic at Hardy Park, located at 4500 Q Street, NW, or at school - welcoming our old friends and meeting our new friends. Halloween Parade in the neighborhood, the Thanksgiving potluck Luncheon, The Holiday Performance, the Easter egg hunt, Mommy and Me breakfast, Donuts with Dad, The End of the School Year performance, and an Art Gallery show.

PARENT EDUCATION

MSOW hosts a series of Parent Education Meetings/Family Forums where we discuss everything Montessori! We touch on parenting the Montessori way by being mindful of your child's interests and present in your interactions with them to potty training etc.

FIELD TRIPS

For many young children, some of the best memories of their preschool journey are made on field trips. They combine the excitement of exploring new places, participating and engaging in new activities, and creating with the joys of learning and education. The social and educational benefits of field trips can’t be overstated. We continue to enjoy the following visits throughout the year -

  • History Museum

  • Science Museum

  • Art Museum

  • National Zoo

  • Butler’s Orchard (Pumpkin Harvest)

  • Historical Sites

  • Botanical Garden

  • Aquarium

  • Cultural Center

BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

  • We encourage parents to come at 9:30 am and join the classroom for the Montessori Birthday “Walk around the Sun” and song Celebration.

  • Parents are welcome to bring a treat that is “nut-free, store-bought, and labeled with the ingredients.”

  • Most parents will bring in cupcakes.

  •  In addition to the walk around the sun, parents may share pictures from years prior, such as (first time at the beach in Mexico or favorite food). The school will provide a form to guide your reflection on the years/ milestones/ moments leading up to the birthday.

  •  Parents usually only stay for the birthday celebration and say goodbye before the children enjoy their special snack with their classmates.

 SPECIAL GUESTS

  • Parents (or Librarians) are welcome to be our surprise book readers. A mystery reader is the same as a guest reader, BUT their identity is kept secret to build anticipation and. excitement! Teachers give clues before the reader arrives to get them extra excited!

  • We enjoy visits from Blue Sky Puppets, the Great Zucchini, Fangs, Frog & More, The Science Guy, and Many more!

MSOW WINTER COAT DRIVE

Embracing Compassion

Winter is not just a season; it’s an opportunity to embrace compassion and community spirit. The Winter Coat Drive by MSOW epitomizes this principle by providing warmth and care to those who need it most.

Keeping Vulnerable Individuals Warm

The children that we help and their families often struggle to stay warm during winter. By participating in the coat drive, we can help ensure that they have access to the warmth and protection they need.

The goal is to collect new or gently used winter coats and distribute them to the children in our community within the district. It’s about turning generosity into tangible warmth.

You can drop them off from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm in front of the primary classroom. We usually have a labeled container and will share more details as we get closer to that time. Thank you for your generosity!
